Anxiety
self help involves 4 STAGES of learning, or change
Anxiety
Self help is available many forms: - DVD's, CD's, and books (that new
term, called "bibliotherapy"!), exercise nutrition programmes, and so
on.
With all of these methods, you will be faced
with
INFORMATION - some of it will be new, some of it not - or
perhaps
you know about it, but have never applied it to your life!
This
is the process that you will go through, as you "tackle " your
challenges:
Stage
1:UNCONSCIOUS INCOMPETANCE:
At this point we don't even know that we
don't have a skill.
In the case of
anxiety or depression, we haven't yet recognised our pattern of state
changes-
ie
when and how we go from feeling good to anxious
or depressed.
Stage 2: CONSCIOUS
INCOMPETANCE:
This is when we have recognised what our anxiety or depression triggers
or anchors are.
We understand that we need to aquire skills to
better manage our
states.
But we have not yet practised that skill.
Stage 3: CONSCIOUS COMPETANCE:
We are aware of doing or thinking something in the right way.
We are FOCUSSING on learning a new skill- so we ACTIVELY PRACTISE a new
method of doing or thinking something.
We are conscious of our thinking and activity pattern that is giving us
a better outcome.
For example- we might start to actively use empowering, positive self
talk and "going toward" language, where
in the
past we may have used self-defeating, negative language, in the same
situation.
In summary, we ACTIVELY think about and
purposefully engage
ourselves,
in a REPETITIVE MANNER, in a
new, more
appropriate and empowering pattern of behaviour
in the situation that usually causes panic or anxiety.
Stage
4: UNCONSCIOUS
COMPETANCE:
This is when we dont have to think about our new pattern of
behaviour anymore - it just happens AUTOMATICALLY, "without
thinking" or "unconsciously".
In other words, we have REWIRED our brain's
response pattern.
In order to reach this unconscious competance, we would have
needed to do Stage 3 (practise!).
Hopefully, you can see from this, that by repeatedly by engaging in
POSITIVE
thought and language
patterns, you can easily learn to be happy, just as you
learned
to be depressed.
If you are in any way skeptical about this, read my information about
"TOWARDS" and "AWAY FROM" LANGUAGE, and see if you recognise any of
your own patterns of internal dialogue (self talk).
"Repetition is the mother of all skill - just make
sure you
are repeating enough of the good stuff!"
